"Let Food Be Thy Medicine And Medicine Be Thy Food"
Despite the sound advice of Hippocrates, a Greek philosopher living over two thousand years ago, to let food be thy medicine, physicians still take the Hippocratic Oath, yet their knowledge of the value of many foods in alleviating, controlling and even curing many common conditions is often minimal. Very often this sparse knowledge is heavily outweighed by the familiarity with the synthetic drugs they dispense daily. Yet food is your best medicine, because it works in a more gentle way without the unpleasant side effects which virtually all pharmaceuticals have.
Add to that, the use of new, alien materials in our foods, such as hydrogenated vegetable oil -- an innocent vegetable oil bastardized by the addition of extra hydrogen molecules -- put in food for commercial considerations, rather than for any health giving properties and the scene is set for the increasing amounts of diseases, such as obesity, type two diabetes, and kidney stones, which are rare or non-existent in less advanced countries.
All of which begs the question: are we treating our bodies – which have evolved little since the stone age – as pieces of 21st century machinery?
The good news is there are plenty of foods which taste great . . . and the even better news is they are rich in health giving properties and many can help alleviate and even reverse many debilitating diseases, most of which -- ironically -- arise from eating over-refined, nutrient empty foods in the first place! So food is your best medicine.
So feast your eyes and then your stomachs on just one example of how you can eat well, get slim, and make yourself healthier simply by becoming a bit more adventurous with your food. Follow the sound advice of Hippocrates and let food be thy medicine, because there's no doubt about it:food is your best medicine.
