Vitamin D


The discovery of vitamin D lead to the cure for the bone disease of Rickets. As vitamin D is synthesized in the body by the action of sunlight on the skin, there is rarely any need for supplements. However, during the winter months, it is advisable to eat some of the few foods that contain vitamin D, in order to top up the dosage.

Sources of vitamin D:
** Sunlight on the skin.
** Oily fish (sardines, salmon, herring)
** Eggs
** Milk

You need vitamin D for:
** The formation of healthy teeth and bones.
** Assists in the absorption of calcium into the body.
** Helps your body assimilate Vitamin A and (combined with vitamins A and C) prevents colds and other infections.

Signs of vitamin D deficiency:
These present mainly in children and the elderly.
** Rickets.
** Various bone diseases.
** Fragile teeth.
** General fatigue.
** Arthritis.
